Whale found dead at empty aquaculture site

November 17, 2016 – Campbell River, B.C.

On November 15, a dead humpback whale was found entangled in an anchor support line at an empty aquaculture site in the company’s northern operating area in Sheep Passage.

The whale was discovered while staff and contractors were in the process of dismantling the site’s anchoring system after a previous entanglement and subsequent safe release of a whale in September. Prior to September’s incident, no such encounter had occurred in the company’s 30 years of operation.

Employees have now dismantled the entire site.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) were notified, and cetacean experts have investigated the incident.

Marine Harvest Canada is currently surveying all aquaculture sites with similar anchoring designs and engineers are making the required changes to eliminate the risk of reoccurrence.
