Marine Harvest Canada announces year-round supply of salmon from ASC-certified operations
June 2, 2017 – Campbell River, B.C.:
Marine Harvest Canada (MHC) is now providing customers with consistent supply of Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certified salmon. With recent certification of three more salmon farms, MHC now has 30% of its active salmon farms covered under the standard, giving the company the ability to satisfy regular monthly orders.
After thorough third-party audits and stakeholder input, the company’s sites located at Sheep Pass, Phillips Arm and Sonora Point were granted certification during the past week.
Meeting ASC salmon requirements is particularly challenging given its demanding expectations and has required fundamental changes to Marine Harvest’s Canadian operations. Demonstrating socially responsible practices that support workers and communities is another significant focus of the standard.
Marine Harvest Group had announced in 2012 that it was committed to having 100% of its salmon farms globally achieve ASC certification by 2020. Katherine Dolmage, MHC’s Certification Manager is pleased with the company’s progress thus far stating that ASC certification at MHC “is well ahead of its schedule thanks to the dedication of all staff to continually raise the bar to achieve and exceed ASC’s strict social and environmental standards.”
Marine Harvest Canada is British Columbia's leading aquaculture company and supplier of Sterling brand salmon and also four-star certified to the Global Aquaculture Alliance Best Aquaculture Practices.
The ASC Salmon Standard was developed as part of the World Wildlife Fund’s aquaculture dialogues. More information about the certified farms can be found at http://marineharvest.ca/planet/salmon_certification/.
